F.W. Webb Goes Green in Hyannis
The F.W. Webb Company is pleased
to announce the completion of our new Hyannis, MA facility. At 65,000 square feet
it is one of the largest in the area. The new location will feature a Frank Webb Bath Center, massive warehouse with 20,000 square
foot mezzanine, 10,000 square foot self service counter area and a fully networked
training and conference area with a capacity for over 80 people. What is unique
about this facility is that it heats the warehouse area and domestic hot water needs with a hybrid geothermal heating system. Prior
to installing the new system, the "building envelope" was upgraded as well
. This included a thermal image of the building. We added insulation, sealed any
cracks and improved weather stripping and dock seals to help make the building itself
as energy efficient as possible.
At
the heart of the system are a
WaterFurnace distributed water to air heat pump system consisting of
15 heat pumps, 3 energy recovery units or heat exchangers, seven wells (3 feed and
4 return) and a 2000 gallon thermal mass tank with two heat exchangers. One unit
heats water, the other takes heat from the water. The Cape has relatively stable
groundwater temperatures, (45-55 degrees) which make it ideal for this type of application.
The energy recovery units keep the warehouse temperature range from 55-75 degrees.
The hybrid part of the system is the solar side.
On the roof of the
building are thirty (30) Buderus
SKN3.Ov flat plate solar panels. Twenty-six of these panels provide heat to the
warehouse area and four provide domestic hot water. The solar system reduces the
load on the geothermal system and on a perfect, sunny day will provide up to 750,000
BTU's of energy, equivalent to 5.4 gal of #2 fuel oil. All of the products
used in this installation, from pipe, valves, fittings, solar panels, expansion
tanks, heat exchangers, pumps, controls, variable speed drives, storage tanks, energy
recovery units, data loggers, heat pumps , thermostats and more are available from
Webb. The building will be Energy Star certified and then re-certified after a year
of operation. There is no back-up boiler for this installation. We burn no fossil
fuels. It is 100% geothermal and thermal solar. Depending on the price
of other energy sources like oil and natural gas, the payback
period should be about eight years.
Says branch manager Marc Nantel, "I am extremely proud of our new building and of
this new installation in particular. Our mechanical contractor did a great job on
this installation. We are going to showcase it to all of our customers. It really
is state of the art and best of all, we were able to coordinate and supply all of
the materials for the job."
